Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

'Media determine our situation, which - in spite or because of it - deserves a description'. Although infamous and provokingly exaggerated, Friedrich Kittlers' statement from 'Grammophon Film Typewriter' (1986) is still worth a second thought. Thus, the purpose of this seminar is to address two major questions: 1) How can one theorize about modern media (film, photography, computer etc.) on a philosophical level? 2) What are the genuine media and institutions of the 'medium' philosophy itself? Finally we will critically discuss the flaws and blind spots of such approaches. Basically, we will concentrate on the groundbreaking work of the Canadian mediatheorist Marshall McLuhan, the French historian Michel Foucault and - of course - Friedrich Kittler.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral presentation, seminar paper (12-15 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Developing a deeper and methodolocically reflected undernstanding of 'media philosophy'.

Examination topics

This seminar is held on a weekly basis. Students will have to give a short presentation and participate in the discussions. Preparation of the basic text samples, that will also be discussed in smaller groups, is mandatory.
