Successful completion of a BM1 is the basis for any following proseminars. This BM1 is bilingual (English and German) for two reasons. First, it accounts for the bilingual nature of our field and allows us to approach issues from two linguistic as well as scientific angles. Second, the ability to move in two languages provides pragmatic advantages to future researchers. More literature can be read and considered, publication opportunities broaden but mostly bilingual academic work provides a basis to approach the same question from different histories of thinking.Prerequisite: Participants are expected to read and debate English texts. That requires participants' language level to be reliable and stable in discursive situations.

Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Contents: We approach the question how schooling and its function has been conceptualized. Deparate from effect research or school management perspectives, this class explores historical and theoretical work and discusses the (linguistic) forms of thinking and speaking about school and schooling. The focus lies on the implications that grow from these different traditions and their insights: The standardization movement and accountability as well as school research and our field's possible contriubtion (and limitations) to education politics shall form the core of our class. Teaching methods: active open-class exchange between participants and with lecturer, self-directed contributions of experiences and ideas into the group, pair/group settings to work on texts, examples and for feedback processes.
