Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The two most influential literary 17th century representations of the tensions between enlightenment and education end with disaster: Voltaire's Candide ends up with gardening at home, Rousseau's Emile ends dependent on his educator and, finally, as slave. Thus, since the beginning of modern educational theorizing, there has been the question if education shares the "dialectics of enlightenment" (Adorno/Horkheimer), i.e. that the price for more enlightenment is getting more dependent. We will discuss classical and more recent attempts to discuss this tension in this course.
