Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Theodore. W. Adorno's radio lecture on education after Auschwitz is considered one of the fundamental educational texts of the second half of the 20th century in German-speaking countries. In the 21st century, after most contemporary witnesses of the Holocaust have died, it is important to us to turn to educational questions relating to crimes against humanity, the industrial annihilation of millions of people, and the attempt to exterminate entire groups of people. In the first part of the seminar, relevant texts on the topic will be developed. In a second part, a block excursion to the Ravensbrück memorial site will be undertaken. This excursion is a compulsory part of the seminar. In teams of two, the participants prepare for the presentation of aspects of 'Pedagogy after Auschwitz' and thus become experts for aspects of the excursion, where they present their topic. Alternatively, they can also work on a topic inspired by the excursion, submit it as an exposé, and work on it as part of a seminar paper. The results and experiences are reflected in a seminar paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

Always in teams of two
1. Exposé of the presentation or the seminar paper on the chosen topic.
2. Presentation and written reflection of the presentation or term paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in the seminar units and the excursion is a condition for the possibility of assessment. The excursion is a mandatory part of the seminar. The excursion takes place in Ravensbrück. Subsidies should be obtained for accommodation costs. The two parts of the performance evaluation flow equally into the evaluation.
