Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In recent years, aspects that can be summarized under the term identity politics, such as racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, anti-feminism, religious persecution, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and disablism, and age discrimination, have come to the fore in the discourse on inequality and injustice. For a while, it seemed as if they had replaced the older left-wing discourse on class politics. In more recent developments, however, the term 'classism' is increasingly used to refer to oppression based on social class as one category of discrimination among others. In the seminar, we will first start with original texts on class theory and intersectional identity politics. Then, using other texts, we will discuss current questions about classism and its relationship to other categories: What characterizes a class identity today? What opportunities and dangers do identity-political categorizations entail? Is classism underrepresented in intersectional identity politics?
