Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

From the very beginning, Sigmund Freud's concern was not only to understand psychoanalysis as a clinical practice, but also to make it productive for cultural and social theoretical questions. Although Freud did not develop a systematic psychoanalytic theory of society, his work contains a continuous examination of anti-Semitism, war and social aggression, the formation of mass movements, identification with a leader figure, the effect of family and social structures on the individual, etc. These approaches were taken up in a very differentiated and varied manner by subsequent psychoanalysts but also by the humanities and social sciences, especially in the period after National Socialism and in the socio-critical approaches of the 1960s and 70s.
With recourse to psychoanalytical concepts and terms such as the unconscious, affects, the imaginary, identifications, projections, enjoyment, the death drive, sadism, narcissism, etc., the course deals with approaches of psychoanalytical social theories and their further development in critical theory, in poststructural, Marxist and ideology-critical discourses in the social sciences and humanities, in gender theories and within transcultural and postcolonial approaches. Beginning with the works of Sigmund Freud and extending to contemporary socio-critical debates, the course presents approaches to discuss and understand social phenomena such as anti-Semitism, racism, fascism, homophobia, mass formation and group identity, problems related to authority, the relationship between society and psyche, the appropriation of gender, questions of identity, fear of the foreign/other, etc. from a psychoanalytical perspective.

Goals
Students are familiar with psychoanalytical theories that provide an understanding of social phenomena and are able to discuss specific social phenomena from a psychoanalytical perspective.

Method and type of course
The course is held as a lecture. Besides the lecture there will be time for questions and for discussion.

CURRENT INFORMATION CONCERNING THE EXAM ON 26.6.2020

As a result of the Covid-19 protective actions the general conditions for this examen has changed!

The examen will take place as indicated on 26.6.2020! The examen will be held as "Take Home Exam"! In this way we avoid overloading the server of the University of Vienna and you have enough time (several days) to work out the exam questions and upload them back to Moodle.
Since you have several days to prepare the exam and the exam is without control, you are welcome to use resources (literature, PP-slides, the videos). It is important in this context that you identify your resources. In which form you quote is up to you. It is explicitly not a disadvantage if you do so, but is desirable for this form of the exam. Copy-paste from the slides is not considered an adequate answer! Please paraphrase, as is common in seminar papers.

You will find the test on Moodle starting on 26.6.2020 (I will send you a message via Moodle as soon as it is available), you download the exam sheet, you work on it on your own computer and then upload it back to Moodle when you are finished within the given period (several days; the exact submission date will be announced).
The exam will be designed to be completed in 1.5 hours, but you will have - as already mentioned - several days to complete it, so that we don't run into technical difficulties.

At the end of May/beginning of June I will set up a test document for download and upload so that you can practice this procedure in advance. More information about this will also be available via a Moodle message.
