Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
This course aims to familiarize students with the main themes and methods in the history of education. Why study the history of education? And how can it be done?

Contents:
This lecture course introduces students to crucial themes and methods in the history of education:
-prosopography and institutional history
-the history of ideas
-quantitative history
-national histories of education
-social theory and the history of education
-schooling and economic history
-global histories of education.

Method:
These themes will be explored by focusing on key texts in the historiography of education and by discussing current challenges in the field.

Assessment and permitted materials

The content of the lectures provides the foundation for the work in the seminars of the same module and will be examined in the modules.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will need a working knowledge of both English and German to follow this course of lectures.
