Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Augmentative and Alternative Communication offers the possibility for persons without or with restricted oral language production to participate in educational processes and in private and public life. Therefore this topic signify an important field for the education sciences.
At the beginning of the course definitions of terms concerning Augmentative and Alternative Communication will be given. Then the lecturer shows an overview of the normal language development and the one of children who use facilitated communication. After regarding different communication systems several methods of assessment, counselling and therapy will be presented, discussed and reflected. Furthermore the seminar focuses on groups of people who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication, e.g. with autism spectrum disorder, congenital or aquired language and speech disorders (aphasia, anarthria/dysarthria, apraxia of speech) and with cognitive disabilities. Altogether the course demonstrates the possibilities and challanges of facilitated communication in special needs education and inclusive settings.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course assessments are based on: regular and active participation in the seminar, students` presentations, individual and group assignments with feedback, scholarly paper with feedback by the lecturer.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students are supposed to get to know the background of Augmentative and Alternative Communication and experience the significance for persons without or with reduced oral language production. Furthermore, the students should built up knowledge about appropriate methods in assessment, counselling and therapy and should be able to judge them. Another aim of the course is to empower the participants to develop independently individual ways of Augmentative and Alternative Communication for specific case examples.

Examination topics

The students approach the topic of Augmentative and Alternative Communication by the lecturer`s introducing presentations. Within own research and process of current and relevant literature the participants are dealing with a specific task. Their results will be presented in the seminar within reports. During and beyond the lessons the students will get some individual and group work tasks. The topic is going to be discussed as practically as possible e.g. based on assessment and therapy materials and case examples.
