Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:

1. acquire and apply theoretical and practical knowledge on phenomenology.
- In the context of inclusion and diversity research BiWi.
- Exemplified by Max Van Manen's everyday phenomenology.
- In relation to the set topic focus (intelligence & giftedness).

Critically reflecting on and understanding the meaning, possibilities & limitations of phenomenology

Acquire practical science skills
- Scientifically informed debates
- Writing scientific papers

Content:

- Recapitulatory overview of basic concepts and meaning of qualitative empirical methods.
- Giftedness and intelligence in educational science & inclusion education.
- Basic knowledge of phenomenology
- Selected topics in the field of phenomenology: everyday phenomenology
- Application of the method to the thematic focus "intelligence and giftedness" against the background of "diversity, (in)equality and inclusion"

Methods:

- Group work: discussions & exercises
- Individual work: research
- Portfolio: Combination of outcomes from individual and group work
- Presentations: Presentation and discussion of the questions, methodological and methodological considerations as well as implementations and results

Assessment and permitted materials

Type of performance review:

- Written paper on the content and findings of the course
- presentation in groups
- Active participation (active contributions in the plenum and in the group)

Permitted aids:

- Texts and books provided by the lecturer.
- Other sources according to the scientific standards of the University of Vienna (physical and digital databases)
- PowerPoint or other (digital) presentation media (to be discussed in advance with the course instructor)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement for a positive assessment is the writing of a portfolio according to the specifications of the course director and a presentation of the results in the form of a paper within the framework of the course. Attendance is compulsory; two unexcused absences are permitted. Attendance at the first appointment is mandatory for a positive assessment. Each part of the work will be evaluated independently. The portfolio will be assessed 50% of the course, the presentation 30% and the active participation 20%.

Assessment standard:

- Presentation in the form of a paper with audiovisual support (e.g. PowerPoint or poster): 30 credits.
- Portfolio: 50 credits
- Active oral participation in the seminar: 20 credits

60 credits and the submission of a portfolio and the delivery of a paper are mandatory to pass the seminar.

- 1 (very good) 100-90 credits
- 2 (good) 89-81 credits
- 3 (satisfactory) 80-71 credits
- 4 (sufficient) 70-60 credits
- 5 (insufficient) 59-0 credits
