Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Following our everyday knowledge we take it for granted that there are two and only two sexes; that everybody belongs either to the one or to the other sex category; and that membership in one or the other sex category is natural and can be identified by inspecting the genitals. Gender studies and the sociology of gender confront this everyday knowledge with a different perspective and argue that gender is a social construction and therefore is (re)produced in social interaction. In this perspective gender is nothing we ›have‹ but something we ›do‹ (›doing gender‹) and under certain conditions can also stop doing (›undoing gender‹). The course will introduce to the concept of doing and undoing gender and provide the means to systematically observe and analyze the social construction, reconstruction and/or deconstruction of gender using the example of the university. The following areas will be taken into account: 1. student life, 2. science, 3. university. Using empirical methods, the students should explore processes of (un)doing gender/doing difference in their own setting of the university. They should critically reflect everyday knowledge of gender, identify practices of differentiation and think of ways to challenge and overcome them.
Assessment and permitted materials
Interactive design of the seminar: In addition to the lecturer's input, students acquire knowledge by reading and discussing texts (including questions to the text). Based on the methods of peer instruction or jeopardy, central theoretical concepts related to education and gender will be actively reflected and interpreted again and again in the course. Furthermore, the processes of (un)doing gender/difference will be explored in three small empirical exercises (student university life, science, university) using qualitative methods.
