Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to train students at proficiently performing the steps necessary to conduct an empirical study in psychology when starting from nothing but a designated topic (topics will be assigned by the lecturer – see below). This is a 2-semester course program. Attendance in the winter semester 2024/25 course is not mandatory but strongly recommended. This first semester aims to prepare the students to conduct an online experiment or a survey for their bachelor project in winter semester 2024/25. In the winter term, there will also be the possibility to work with data that have already been collected, including electrocardiogram (ECG) data.
The steps:
(1) Become familiar with a topic
(2) Find a research question and formulate hypotheses
(3) Identify and assess the methods available
(4) Design your study
(5) Implement your study
(6) Conduct the study
Program: The students will be taught the steps 1 to 6. Six groups of 4 students each will be created. Each group will write one report for each step from 1 to 4 and will be evaluated on this basis.

Assessment and permitted materials

*** Added on 15.2.2024: ***
In addition to uploading the 4 reports on Moodle, each group will also briefly present each of their reports orally in front of the class. These presentations will contribute to the grading of the reports.
In order to ensure good scientific practice, the course instructor may in addition require an oral reflection on the submitted report in an individual meeting with the group, which must be successfully completed.
The software "turnitin" will be used to perform an automated plagiarism check on all written reports produced during this lecture course.

*******
Grading system: 4 reports per group (written in English, 800 words per report, bibliographical references excluded, counting 60% in total; one oral presentation per group counting 20%; individual participation in class and online counting 20%; writing peer-feedback on another group’s reports (graded as passed or failed).
