Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to train the students at proficiently performing the steps necessary to conduct an empirical study in psychology when starting from nothing but a designated topic (see below). This course aims to prepare the students to conduct an experiment or a survey for their bachelor project in summer semester 2019. Attendance to summer semester 2019 course is not mandatory but strongly recommended.
The steps:
(1) Become familiar with a topic
(2) Find a research question and formulate hypotheses
(3) Identify and assess the methods available
(4) Design your study
(5) Implement your study
(6) Conduct the study
Program: The students will be taught the steps 1 to 6. The students will be requested to produce a group-based work for each step from 1 to 4 and will be evaluated on this basis. Groups of 4 students are to be created.
The course will be divided into theory sessions (teacher's advice) and practical sessions (supervised group work).

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading system: 4 group reports (800-1600 words, bibliographical references excluded) counting 15% each; one oral presentation per group counting 30%; individual participation in class and online counting 10%; active participation in experiments counting as bonus for up to +3%.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Good reading skills in English. Attendance is compulsory; students may be absent without excuse for no more than two lectures.

Examination topics

Designated topic: The course focuses on hypnosis and hypnotizability. To guarantee the teacher’s expertise in researched topics and to constrain the vastness of scientific literature, this year’s designated topics are the relationship of hypnotizability to (1) empathy and to (2) placebo effects.

Reading list

Introductory literature: Oakley DA, Halligan PW. Hypnotic suggestion: opportunities for cognitive neuroscience. Nat Rev Neurosci 2013;14:564-76.
Additional literature will be announced during the course.
