Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of the seminar is to impart the skills and competence to write a scientifically sound (usually empirical) scientific paper in accordance with current scientific standards. This work is usually based on the literature analysis of the previous semester's Fachliteratur-Seminar. However, it is also possible to write deviating or independent ("new") papers.
The following skills and competencies are developed in the bachelor's seminar:
- the development of about three research questions based on the topic of the Fachliteratur Seminar paper (or a new topic)
- the formulation of a corresponding number of empirically testable hypotheses
- the development and creation of an optimal design for the examination of the questions and hypotheses including sample planning with regard to criteria and size on the basis of a power analysis
- the operationalization of the terms and concepts to be tested using scientific instruments and methods
- the development and implementation of a concrete study to test the hypotheses
- the statistical evaluation of the data obtained and the testing of the hypotheses on the basis of suitable statistical methods, including the examination of the prerequisites for their application
- their presentation in the form of a scientific talk
- the preparation of a report on the study and its results in form of a bachelor thesis, which meets the criteria of a scientific paper according to APA (7th ed.)
- professional discussion of the findings including the limitations of the study and its implications for future research.

The seminar will introduce and practice the development of questions and hypotheses, the proper development and planning of the study design and the search for and selection of suitable procedures/instruments. The result of these steps is the so-called "planning paper", which contains the concept of the planned study including theoretical background, questions, hypotheses, planned design, instruments and armored study execution and planned statistical analysis.
In the second part of the seminar, the statistical evaluation, the examination of the prerequisites for the application of concrete tests and the preparation of the report of results (bachelor thesis) are worked out, as well as the presentation of a scientific talk.
Students are also introduced to the APA manual for the preparation of scientific psychological papers (7th edition); the standard citation of literature and the proper preparation of a bibliography are refreshed from the FLS using the 7th edition of the APA standards.
This is done on the one hand by means of audio-commented sets of slides, lectures in the seminar, work assignments with teacher feedback as well as presentations of the students with mutual feedback and joint discussions.
Peer-Review of the draft: The first draft of the bachelor thesis has to undergo a so-called "peer review", i.e. a commentary by another student, before it is handed in to the course instructor. The comments can be incorporated into the Bachelor thesis.

Assessment and permitted materials

The performance in the bachelor's seminar is examined and evaluated by means of the following written and oral contributions and individual performances:
- Presentation and discussion of the study plan in form of a conception talk
- Presentation and discussion of the study and its results in form of a so-called results or evaluation report
- Peer-review of the draft of the bachelor thesis (is not evaluated in terms of content, but is obligatory)
- Creation of a first version of the bachelor thesis (thesis-draft). After the presentation of the results, the first version of the bachelor thesis will be written and handed in and edited and corrected by the seminar instructor and given a preliminary grade
- Active participation in the units, especially in the discussions
- Final version of the Bachelor thesis

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The bachelor seminar is a course with compulsory attendance and permanent examination. Seminar participants may only be absent once without excuse; additional activites must be provided in case of further absences.
The overall grade is made up of the following partial performances:
- First version of the paper: 20 Pt
- Presentation 1: 20 Pt
- Presentation 2: 20 Pt
- Cooperation: 10 Pt
- Final version BA: 30 Pt
- Total: 100 Pt

The sum of the above mentioned partial performances results in the grade according to the following scale:
- 100 - 87.5 points: very good (1) sehr gut
- 87.0 - 75 pts.: good (2) gut
- 62.5 - 74.5 pts.: satisfactory (3) befriedigend
- 50.0 - 62.0 pts.: sufficient (4) genügend
- < 49.5 pts.: Not enough (5) nicht genügend
For a positive completion of the seminar at least 50 points are necessary.

Examination topics

There is no exam. Accordingly there is no examination material.
