Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Course title: Me, myself and I: Understanding and designing the research on self-representation and decision biasesThe seminar is designed to give an overview of some of the recent and ground-breaking research paradigms on self-representation in relation to decision biases in the field of psychology ranging from social cognition to social psychology with an aim to guide participants to be able to understand, analyze, and apply given research topics and explore research questions to accommodate their own research interests. The seminar is suitable for master students who are in the process of deciding the master project topics, or for those who would like to build a collaborative work on self-representation and decision biases. The seminar consists of three parts: research paper presentations (understanding the topics), topic discussions (analyzing the research contents), and writing a mini-research proposal (creating own research questions to test new ideas/re-test existing ideas via new methods). Course materials are short lectures at the beginning of each class, and research articles that will be available to download from the University library. To ensure the quality of end product of the seminar, there will be a two- to three-person team work for discussions, presentation, and proposal reviews. Towards the end of the seminar, each participant reviews a team member’s proposal and the final proposal will be submitted after incorporating the feedback from the reviewer team member.
Assessment and permitted materials
The assessment will be 20% on two quiz sessions in reading weeks, 20% on the research article presentation and 10% on the project idea presentation, and 50% on the final proposal. (10% on the review, and 40% on the final proposal). Feedback will be given individually in a written form for the presentation and the final proposal.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirements are attendance check (maximum 2 absence) and the review and the submission of the final proposal. The assessment criteria lies in the overall purpose of the seminar, which is to enable participants to effectively absorb research articles and build an analytic thinking style to improve the existing paradigms and research outputs in the field. These skills will be crucial for designing and conducting their master project in the end.
