Classes (iCal) - next class is marked with N

I will check how many registered students turn up for the first session. For every student who does not turn up, another student will be registered from the waiting list. For those of you on the waiting list >25, there is usually no point in coming because it is unlikely that you will be able to attend. At the first meeting I will also give you all the information about the organisation of the seminar.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Neurofeedback based on real-time fMRI allows participants and patients to learn voluntary control over their own brain activity. Even though this approach is still in its infancy, neurofeedback training has shown to be remarkably resourceful and holds great promise both clinically and as a scientific tool. Studies have shown that neurofeedback-based brain training produces behavioral and therapeutic effects.
In this seminar, we will first aim at understanding the methodological underpinnings of neurofeedback. Subsequently, we will discuss neurofeedback for cognitive enhancement and clinical interventions.

Specifically, we will address the following questions:
- What cutting-edge technology is needed for implementing real-time fMRI neurofeedback?
- What are the psychological and biological factors underlying successful neurofeedback training?
- What can neurofeedback tell us about the brain-mind relationship?
- How can neurofeedback be established as a novel therapeutic approach?

Assessment and permitted materials

- attendance
- active participation in discussions
- presentation of a scientific paper

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- missing 2 classes max
- active participation in discussions: 50%
- presentation of a scientific paper (approx. 15min): 50%

Examination topics

Active participation in discussions of literature covered in the seminar, critical thinking, sharing knowledge, and asking relevant questions.
The presentation of the scientific paper will cover a concise summary of its content, provide context, and stimulates discussion of open questions.
There won’t be a written exam.
