Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The master's thesis serves as proof of the ability to work independently on scientific topics and to do so in a way that is justifiable in terms of content and methodology. Graduates should be able to develop a research question independently and to conduct and document a scientific study. The seminar supports the students in achieving this goal by providing professional guidance in the preparation of the master's thesis. This includes professional support in the search for a specific research question, the theory-based development of hypotheses, the design of an empirical study and the implementation of data collection (or the use of existing data), the evaluation of the data and the writing of the master thesis.

In order to achieve these goals, the master thesis seminar offers an interactive platform in which the process of the master thesis is discussed with the supervisors and the other students at weekly intervals. The interactive approach requires an active participation of the students in the units: the students report about the status of their master thesis, about upcoming tasks and next steps and possible difficulties and ask appropriate questions. Depending on the phase of the master thesis, a longer discussion may be necessary. In this case, students are asked to write to the lecturer at least one day before the seminar to express their question/concern and to indicate the approximate time required for the meeting. This concern will then be given priority in the following seminar unit. In addition, each student gives a formal presentation (20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion) once a semester. Depending on the phase of the master thesis, the presentation will either include the planning of the master thesis (followed by a written synopsis), or the results of the master thesis.

The units take place weekly, each Wednesday from 13:15 to 14:45. In the first unit, the procedure and the specific topics of the master's theses are discussed and dates for the presentations are set. From the second unit on, the units are interactive and are based on the current questions of the students. The presentations can be held between semesters if necessary, but no later than 30.09.2023.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course requires regular, active participation (80% minimum attendance, i.e. max. two absences). Attendance is a necessary pre-requisite for the successful completion of the course. In addition, the quality of the exposé (in the 1st semester of the master thesis) or the presentation (in the 2nd semester of the master thesis) will be evaluated.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Presentation (20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion, 1 x semester):
Depending on the phase of the master thesis, either the planning or the results of the master thesis will be presented.
The presentation of the planning of the master thesis serves the purpose of presenting and discussing the planning of the master thesis so that the master thesis can benefit from the feedback. The presentation should therefore address the research question and its rationale/relevance, the hypotheses and their theoretical derivation, and the methods and anticipated limitations.
The presentation of the results of the master thesis serves the purpose of presenting and discussing the results of the master thesis. For this purpose, the research question and its justification/relevance, the hypotheses and their theoretical derivation as well as the method shall be briefly discussed. Subsequently, the results (both hypothesis-testing and exploratory) and their discussion (including limitations of the study) should be presented.
The slides are intended to support the presentation, not replace it. That is, they should illustrate what is not easy to put into words (e.g., models, tables, graphs) and should serve as a memory aid (e.g., definitions, important keywords, key publications, etc.). The presentation should be free-form, using language that is simple but precise and consistent in the use of terms and reasoning. The discussion is intended both to discuss your own open questions and, most importantly, to get input from students and faculty. The discussion should address questions and contributions to the discussion in a constructive and informed manner.
The presentation must be uploaded by the deadline (no later than 8am on the day of the presentation).

Exposé:
After the presentation of the planning of the master thesis, the exposé should be written. In it the planning of the master thesis is written down. The exposé contains an introduction with the research question, its relevance and scientific originality (approx. 500 words); the theoretical background with the relevant theoretical concepts and their relation to the research question and the derivation of the hypotheses (approx. 1,500 words); the method with the design, the planned sample incl. a power analysis, the procedure, the operationalization of the constructs and an evaluation plan. a power analysis, the procedure, the operationalization of the constructs, and an evaluation strategy (approximately 1,000 words); the discussion of anticipated limitations and their relevance to the interpretation of the results (approximately 500 words); a timeline for the major milestones of the master's thesis; and a reference list. The format of the synopsis follows the APA Manual, 7th edition (see student paper). The synopsis is due no later than 30.08.2023.

Evaluation and grading key:
An active attendance (max. 2 absences), one presentation per semester (planning or results) and the exposé handed in on time are necessary requirements of the course (i.e. if not fulfilled, the course is considered as failed). The overall grade is an average (rounded down or up) of the grades for the partial performances: 1 (very good), 2 (good), 3 (satisfactory), 4 (sufficient), 5 (insufficient).
