Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Educational psychology at the secondary school level focuses on the development of skills and personality in middle childhood and adolescence. The seminar “Educational Psychology in Secondary Education” aims to deepen relevant psychological concepts and theories and apply them to examples of educational practice. Special emphasis is placed on the socio-emotional development of adolescents, ways of dealing with heterogeneous educational and developmental prerequisites and evidence-based design of educational processes. Further topics include the transfer of scientific findings into school practice and the professional development of school and teaching quality.
The course combines input from the lecturer with interactive elements (e.g. group discussions, role plays) and work on case studies. In addition, the course will offer direct insights into the field of educational practice. Direct exchange formats with practitioners as well as joint school visits are planned.

Assessment and permitted materials

A portfolio is used to assess individual written performance. The portfolio involves written reflection and elaboration of the course material as well as work on case studies. Moreover, students' participation in class will be included in grading. This refers to constructive participation and engagement in discussion and exercise phases.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• Attendance is compulsory; if more than 25% of the attendance phases are missed, students need to take an oral exam
• Timely submission of the portfolio - To ensure good scientific practice, the course instructor may invite students to a grade-relevant discussion after submission of the portfolio, which must be completed positively

Points are awarded for the performance components.

• Portfolio: 80 points (given/agreed submission deadline must be adhered to)
• Contribution, engagement in the discussion and exercise phases (constructive, correct contributions and involvement): 20 points
60 points are required for a positive grade in the course.

2 (“Gut”) 89-81 points
3 (“Befriedigend”) 80-71 points
4 („Genügend“) 70-60 points
