Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The master's thesis serves as proof of the ability to work independently on scientific topics and to do so in a way that is justifiable in terms of content and methodology. Graduates should be able to develop a research question independently and to conduct and document a scientific study. The seminar supports the students in achieving this goal by providing professional guidance in the preparation of the master's thesis. This includes professional support in the search for a specific research question, the theory-based development of hypotheses, the design of an empirical study and the implementation of data collection (or the use of existing data), the analysis of the data and the writing of the master's thesis.

Assessment and permitted materials

In order to achieve these goals, the master thesis seminar offers an interactive platform in which the process of the master thesis is discussed with the supervisors and the other students at weekly intervals. The interactive approach requires an active co-creation of the units by the students: the students report on the status of their master thesis, on upcoming tasks and next steps and any difficulties and ask appropriate questions. Depending on the phase of the master thesis, a longer discussion may be required. In this case, the students are asked to formulate their question/concern in writing to the course instructor at least one day before the seminar unit and to announce the approximate time required for the meeting. This concern will then be given priority in the following seminar unit. In addition, each student gives a formal presentation (20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion) once a semester. Depending on the phase of the master thesis, the presentation will either include the planning of the master thesis (followed by a written synopsis), or the results of the master thesis.
