Aims, contents and method of the course

“Autism, ADHD, and Psychological Distress in Educational Contexts: Foundations and Practical Application in Peer Counseling within ISU”

This course provides practical training for the role of a peer counselor within the Individual Study Support (ISU) program. It aims to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on counseling skills to support neurodivergent students as well as those experiencing psychological distress or mental health challenges at the University of Vienna. Students will develop essential counseling competencies to effectively assist peers with support needs. A particular emphasis is placed on understanding and professionally engaging with students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, and psychological distress.

Course Objectives:
* Raising awareness and fostering a deeper understanding of psychological distress among students, ADHD, autism, and related cognitive and learning styles, along with the challenges these pose in a university setting.
* Developing key counseling competencies, particularly in study organization, structuring the learning process, managing exam anxiety, communication with instructors, and social interaction.
* Gaining confidence in handling challenging situations, learning crisis intervention strategies, and acquiring conversational techniques to interact empathetically yet professionally with students experiencing psychological distress.
* Becoming familiar with available support services and referral options at the university.
Understanding self-care and setting personal boundaries in peer counseling to prevent emotional overload.

Please note: A mandatory 30-hour internship within ISU is a central component of this course, allowing students to apply their acquired knowledge directly and gain hands-on experience in peer counseling.

4-6 hours of the required 30 internship hours can be completed through workshops offered as part of the Qualification Program for Student Multipliers (QuaM). The schedule for these workshops is available on the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) website:
