Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The introductory seminar introduces students to the fundamentals of scientific work and its research process which is of central importance not only for their entire course of study but also for further research. The main principles of the scientific work will be introduced and discussed, and the diverse types of scientific texts and techniques of scientific research will be addressed. The aim is for students to acquire basic competencies, skills, and techniques to comprehend and process scientific texts, to work with and organize sources, and to become acquainted with the steps of scientific research in general as well as its writing process. Likewise, the independent production and development of research questions are expected in order to complete a research proposal.Students are encouraged to regularly check the Moodle platform and official e-mails of the University of Vienna for up-to-date adjustments to this course due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment criteria are active participation in the seminar, completion of short written exercises, and preparation of a research proposal.Further details will be introduced during the first session and uploaded to the Moodle platform. This seminar will be held in English.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirements will include positively completing all the assessment criteria mentioned above. Active participation is expected not only in small groups but also in plenary discussions.Two unexcused absences are allowed. Please notice that attendance at the first session is mandatory.Grading Scale:
1 = 87-100 % excellent (outstanding performance)
2 = 75-86 % good (generally good)
3 = 63-74 % satisfactory (generally sound work with a number of substantial errors)
4 = 50-62 % sufficient (performance meets the minimum criteria)
5 = 0 – 49 % unsatisfactory (< 50%; substantial improvement necessary; requirement of further work)Good academic practice is expected. This includes a proper citation of sources.
