Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objective: The course aims to give its participants the tools to conduct strong qualitative studies.

Contents: The course will give an introductory overview over the qualitative research process in empirical social research with a focus on the most important qualitative methods, including interviews, focus groups, participant and non-participant observation, discourse/text analysis, and visual analysis.

In practical sessions we will learn how to:
- find a research question
- choose a suitable research method
- apply our chosen research method
- analyze the data we collected
- draw conclusions based on our analysis
- answer the research question
- be mindful of ethical aspects of our research, including our own role in the process and potential biases

Methods: Each session we will address a different aspect of the qualitative research process, from a theoretical introduction to a practical exercise.

Assessment and permitted materials

To obtain a passing grade, students are required to
- write a research diary throughout the course
- prepare one group presentation on one topic during the course
- participate in the group discussions and contribute to the practical exercises
- complete a qualitative research project of their choosing (necessary skills will be taught during the class, regular feedback will be given)
Regular attendance is mandatory.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Prior knowledge of qualitative research methods is not required.

Students should be able to understand academic English literature and willing to speak English in class. The final project can be written in English or German.
