Aims, contents and method of the course

Principles of quantitative research; data collection; measurement; descriptive statistics; measures of central tendency; measures of variation; samples and population; hypothesis tests and statistical significance; comparing means and proportions; measures of association; covariance and correlation

Assessment and permitted materials

  • Participation in class (10%)

  • Four homework exercises (25%)

  • Mid term exam (25%)

  • Term paper and possible reflection on it (40%)

Attendance is mandatory. More detailed explanations are available in German.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Studierende sollen am Ende der Lehrveranstaltung

  • die grundlegenden Methoden und einfache statistische Verfahren in den Sozialwissenschaften kennen und verstehen,

  • Ergebnisse quantitativer Sozialforschung in Forschung und Medien interpretieren und evaluieren können,

  • selbst in der Lage sein, Fragestellungen zu entwickeln und mittels quantitativer Methoden zu beantworten und

  • fähig sein, die Ergebnisse quantitativer Forschung angemessen darzustellen.
