Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar examines transformation and integration processes in China (including Hongkong; Macao) and Taiwan in comparative perspective. The focus lies on the developments since 1949, but the historical background and political concepts or ideas dating from the late imperial era and the period of the Chinese Republic will also be referred to.
The seminar starts with a general overview of the nation-building process in East Asia with a special focus on China . It also provides students with a profound knowledge of transformation and modernization theories, as well as concepts of post-socialism and post-communism.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation requirements: Preparation of the required literature, active participation in the seminar discussions, short presentation in class (the hand-out has to be sent three days before the presentation via email), final paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Introduction to theories of transformation and democratization; basic understanding of the nation-building processes in the East Asian region
