210025 PS BAK 3 Introduction to scientific work (2013S)

Continuous assessment of course work

The seminar introduces students to scientific work in social sciences by following a typical research workflow starting from information gathering, formulating research question, writing the first draft and editing it all the way to the final research essay that complies with all formal requirements. At each stage, students are explained the basic expectations together with some tips for various software and Internet solutions that can improve effectiveness of their writing process. Students will be required to complete 3 assignments that will be discussed in seminars and used as building blocks for their final essay. Students attending the seminars should have a good working knowledge of English, since all the lectures, seminar materials and assignments will be exclusively in English. All communication is to take place on Moodle e-learning platform.

The final mark received by the students will be based on two criteria:
- Regular active participation during the lectures and assessment of 3 interim assignments (50% of the final mark)
- Final essay (50% of the final mark).
