Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course familiarizes students with the major theoretical and empirical issues in electoral studies studying in particular citizens' electoral choices and media effects. First, the course offers a theoretical overview of the major discussions in electoral research on these two main topics. Second, it examines their methodological approaches, analysing both questionnaires and code books of former national and European elections studies. Third, it provides an introduction into SPSS and text-mining software as well as basic statistics. Finally, the course concludes in the winter term with the elaboration of the main questionnaire (voters' decisions) and the code book (media analysis) which will be used in the summer term for the analysis of the upcoming European Parliament elections in June 2009.

In the summer term 2009, the course continues with the data gathering process (pre-election study amongst Austrian voters and media analysis of Austrian newspapers) and the empirical analyses of the various datasets.
