Aims, contents and method of the course

Discourse and Counter Discourse on Latin America
In this class, we discuss ideas of 17th and 18th-century liberalism and the justification or rejection of European colonialism and expansion. We analyze the texts of enlightenment writers like Adam Smith, Rousseau, and Hegel. In addition, the ambivalent ideas on colonialism of Karl Marx are examined. The Latin American and Caribbean counter-discourse, which partly refers to the above-mentioned European philosophers, will be critically analyzed. We will look at the anti-imperial texts by José Martí, Aime Cesaire, and Frantz Fanon.

Assessment and permitted materials

Review of course texts and an essay - due July 28th, 2020.

Small Essay of course texts 30 Points
Review Essay (min. 2800 words) 70 Points

Grading Scale:
1 (sehr gut) 100-89 points
2 (gut) 88-76 points
