Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is an introductory reading course in comparative politics. It provides students with an overview of basic concepts in comparative politics and the main approaches to analyzing political processes, institutions and policies.

The course will address the following topics:
- Theoretical foundations and methods in comparative political analysis
- Political culture
- Voters and parties
- Legislatures and the legislative process
- The executive branch
- The welfare state
- Social learning
- Politics and language
- Th EU as a political system

Assessment and permitted materials

The language of instruction is English. Students are expected to have a solid command of the English language, in terms of reading, speaking and writing.

Please sign up for this course via univis before the start of the semester; this is mandatory! It is not possible to sign up afterwards. Only students who are regularly registered via univis can participate in the course. It is mandatory to attend the first unit on 8 October 2014. Students who miss the first unit will lose their place in the course and may be replaced by students from the waiting list.

If you decide not to take the course, please deregister by 1 November 2014. If you stop attending the course and do not deregister, you will receive a failing grade.

Attendance for this course is mandatory and will be taken at every class meeting (unit). University regulations allow for up to two unexcused absences during the semester. A medical note is required for any further absence. Accruing more than two absences without a medical note will negatively affect the final mark. Absence due to job or work-related reasons will not be accepted. Students who miss more than six units (regardless of reason) will fail the course.

Evaluation:
- Attendance and active participation in class discussions - 30%
- Weekly assignments - 30%
- Final exam - 40%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of the course is to deepen students' understanding of fundamental concepts and approaches in political science with a focus on the comparative analysis of politics. The course will also develop students' analytical skills through their critical engagement with arguments from the relevant academic literature.

Examination topics

Assigned readings, group and plenary debates, weekly written assignments with critical summaries of the required readings. The summaries should NOT be longer than two double-spaced pages.
