Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to introduce students to basic theoretical and empirical concepts of comparative politics. In addition, fundamental areas of climate policy research will be discussed. Students should be able to use these concepts to develop research ideas, questions and hypotheses on the topic of climate policy research and to analyze initial empirical results.

The contents consist of the following:
• Theoretical foundations and methods of comparative politics
• Fundamentals of climate policy research
• Public support for climate policy dimensions
• Economic and-psychological factors of climate policy support

The focus is on reading texts, the content of which is developed independently and then presented and discussed in the course. During the course, students will practice and apply the techniques of academic work and writing. These include correct citation, the correct documentation of sources, comprehensible linguistic expression and compliance with text-type-specific rules. In addition, participants should gain initial experience in communicating complex content effectively.

Attendance is compulsory in the first session, otherwise missing students will be deregistered from the course and students from the waiting list may be admitted. Regular deregistration from the course is only possible in accordance with the official deadlines. All students registered after this date will be graded, i.e. including those who drop out of the course during the semester.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation and continuous reading of the compulsory literature are core components of this course. In addition, great importance is attached to the writing of a research concept and a group presentation. These partial performances are divided into five areas (see below). The overall grade is calculated from the weighted average of the following partial performances:

• Attendance and active participation (i.e. maximum two absences) (15 %)
• Written processing of the compulsory literature (2 publications for each block) (15 %)
• Group presentation of one text of the compulsory literature (20 %)
• Submission of a written outline of ideas for the final thesis (10 %)
• Final thesis (3,000 - 3,500 words) (40 %)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students must provide at least partial performance in all sub-areas. This means that the attendance requirements must be met, active participation must be frequent, a majority of the written assignments must be handed in, the group presentation has to meet the minimal criteria, the idea sketch and the final thesis must be submitted. If one of these partial performances is not fulfilled, the course cannot be completed positively.

< 63 & >= 50 Points: Sufficient (4)
< 50 Points: Not sufficient (5)
