Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This is an introductory reading course in comparative politics. It provides students with an overview of basic concepts in comparative politics and the main approaches to analyzing political processes, institutions and policies.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation on the basis of the readings (10%).Short inputs with 3-4 slides on one of the readings (12- 15 min.), in groups of two or three, plus one handout (1p. per person) (20%). Instead of giving an input, students can choose to act as a discussant in some sessions. Discussant also prepare a handout but instead of presenting they ask questions to the presenters and prepare questions for the discussion.Any written assignments may be subject to an interview by the instructor, which will co-determine the grades of the written assignment.Two essays (1,500 – 2,000 words each) due 1.12.2015 respectively 28.1.2016. For the essays, you will be asked to respond to a specific question through applying some of the approaches and concepts in the readings to a particular political issue or event. The questions will be announced on 20.10.2015 respectively 1.12.2015 (20% each).A written exam (30 Min.) on the course contents on 16.1.2016 (30%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The objective of the course is to deepen students' understanding of fundamental concepts and approaches in political science with a focus on the comparative analysis of politics. The course will also develop students' analytical skills through their critical engagement with arguments from the relevant academic literature.
