Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is an introductory reading course in comparative politics. It provides students with an overview of basic concepts in comparative politics and the main approaches to analyzing political processes, institutions and policies.
The objective of the course is to deepen students' understanding of fundamental concepts and approaches in political science with a focus on the comparative analysis of politics. The course will also develop students' analytical skills through their critical engagement with arguments from the relevant academic literature.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance and active participation in class discussions.
Short oral presentations on one of the course readings in groups of 2-3 persons (ca.15 min.) supported by a powerpoint presentation (3-5 slides). In addition, each member of the group will submit a handout (1 p.) on the text as a whole. (20%)
One essays (2.000 – 2.500 words), deadline 10.5. 2016. For the essays, you will receive two essay questions on 15 March 2016, out of which you will pick one. (30%)
A collection of memory papers (1-2 p.) on each of the readings in the course Reader plus one further text (Immergut 1990). The papers will address the topic and the main points of the text, explain 3-5 key concepts and frame one questions. Each memory paper has to be uploaded prior to the respective course session on moodle. (20%)
One written exam (60 min.) on the last day of class (30%).
All assignments can be done in German or in English.
All assignments have to be uploaden on moodle in time.
All written course work may be subject to an interview that will affect your grade.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance for this course is mandatory and will be taken at every class meeting (unit). University regulations allow for up to two unexcused absences during the semester. Students who miss more than three units (regardless of reason) will fail the course.

The language of instruction is German. Students are expected to have a solid command of the German language, in terms of reading, speaking and writing.

The readings required for this course are compiled in a reader that can be purchased at Facultas Shop, NIG, Erdgeschoss. Additional readings will be made available through moodle.

Please make sure to purchase the reader compiled for the summer semester 2015! Please purchase the reader compiled for THIS COURSE. The reader only includes part of the assigned texts. The remaining texts will be provided to students at the beginning of the semester.
