Degrowth stands for the proposal that a planned reduction of the size and material-energetic throughput of economies of the global North is necessary to avoid further trespassing of planetary boundaries, and that this can improve well-being, equality, and autonomy. In recent years, this idea has not only become a prominent slogan within social movements, but also moved to the centre of a burgeoning field of research. This course introduces the degrowth debate, focusing on the latest developments in degrowth-related research. Specifically, we cover degrowth-minded diagnoses of ecological crises, the problem of decoupling, different variants and lines of argumentation of growth critique, the connection between ecological and (global) justice issues, political proposals for growth-independent social institutions, as well as socio-ecological transformation strategies. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with degrowth and related concepts and controversies, and to critically discuss selected recent international research in the field. In practical terms, we will work with a broad mix of interactive group methods, targeted inputs and text-based critical discussion. The MA seminar takes place in two blocks in May (12-13) and June (9-10), with one digital introductory class on March 24. Within the two blocks, we will decide together how to allocate sufficient time for breaks.

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces the degrowth debate, focusing on the latest developments in degrowth-related research. Assessment and permitted materials

- Regular reading of the texts and active participation
- Active participation in the discussion (10%)
- Book summary (10-15 pages) and book review (2 pages) (25%) – please upload on Moodle until July 8
- Short input (5 minutes) and thesis paper on a text (1 page) or protocol (1-2 pages) (15%) - please upload on Moodle one week before course session (for thesis papers) or one week after course session (for protocol)
- Term paper of 10 pages or oral examination (50%)
