Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture course aims to offer a systematic and in-depth overview of the most important theories in International Politics, with a particular focus on International Security. Furthermore, it aims at providing the skills to apply such theories and concepts at current world politics events. We will look at realism, liberal institutionalism, social constructivism, three levels of analysis for the causes of war and the conditions for peace (systemic, individual and domestic politics), as well as ‘new’ security threats, in particular terrorism and ethnic conflict.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

It should be verified to which extent the students have learnt to use the theoretical and conceptual material and apply them to concrete, empirical cases, as well as the capacity to argue and critique existing paradigms. Participation in discussions.
