Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar provides an introduction to the structure and functioning of European parliaments. It covers the activities of political parties - the central actors in the parliamentary arena - as well as the roles of single MPs. It will also deal with the parliament's interactions with other institutional actors such as the government, president, constitutional court as well as interest groups. Case selection covers predominantly European parliamentary democracies. Comparison with parliaments of non-European presidential democracies will be included, but limited in scope.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading criteria for the course will be the reaction papers (15 percent), presentation and participation in class (25 percent) and the seminar paper (60 percent).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will gain knowledge of relevant facts about the topic and learn about the range of explanations used to explain institutional features of parliaments and behavioural patterns of parliamentary party groups and MPs.

Examination topics

Requirements include several short reaction papers on the weekly required reading. Each participant is expected to give a presentation and to write a term paper (maximum 20 pages). Language of instruction is German. Presentations and term papers in English are allowed. Readings selected for the course will be predominantly in English.
