Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The reading course examines links between legal and illegal practices embedded within the broader context of the imperial mode of living and supplements the lecture "International Politics", which discusses the historical, conceptual and theoretical basics of international politics in general. In particular, we will focus on the global trade of illicit drugs and the socio-ecological crisis. Critical perspectives will be applied to these contemporary debates in order to broaden our understanding of the unequal global north-south relations. The production, distribution, and consumption of illicit drugs are interrelated and affect politics in a myriad of ways by shaping social behavior, local and national institutions, cultural practices, markets, and international relations. In a similar way, an analysis of socio-environmental struggles reveals the assumption of unlimited access to resources, which is secured through hegemonic patterns of the world economy and a contested role of the state. Among the topics and categories to be discussed are postcolonial approaches, intersectionality, illicit drug trade, drug policy, and global political ecology; these will be used to explore the complexity of the dynamics between the geopolitical north and south.

Assessment and permitted materials

The reading course requires a continuous assessment of work and therefore attendance is mandatory. Active participation is expected during all sessions. Group or individual oral presentations will be organized accordingly. There will be the option to attend guest lectures instead. A final review paper (min. 2000 words) or podcast (10-15 minutes) will be compulsory, which can be submitted in English or Spanish. Details about the deadline and structure of the course will be agreed during the first session.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements will include to positively complete all the assessment criteria mentioned above.

Grading criteria*:
1. Reading notes: 20%
2. Video presentation: 40%
3. Final review paper or podcast: 40%

Further details will be introduced during the first session and uploaded to the Moodle platform. The reading course will be held in English. However, working knowledge of German is required as some articles will be in German.

Good academic practice is expected. This includes a proper citation of sources.

*From 11 March 2020, teaching at the University of Vienna is taking place in the form of remote learning. Earlier criteria ('Attendance and active participation' and 'oral presentation or report on guest lectures') are no longer valid and have been replaced. The final review paper or podcast remains unchanged. Please visit the Moodle site of this course for more details and up-to-date adjustments.
