Aims, contents and method of the course

Literature Course - International Politics with Focus on China

Contents of the course:

1. In direct connection to the IR lecture / Prof. Brand, selected contents of IR literature will be deepened.

2. In addition to the IR lecture / Prof. Brand, students will be introduced to Chinese theories in the field of IR and their current implementation practice in International Organizations.

3. In the context of historical, recent and contemporary IR theories, students will be provided with corresponding insights into Chinese narratives, complementary to the lecture of Prof. Brand.

Assessment and permitted materials

- 7 written mini-tests, English/German (multiple choice and reflection questions)
- Option for additional written work (in case of missed mini-test)
- Attendance required (no online classes)

Teaching methods:
- Lecture by the lecturer in combination with e-learning tools.
- in-depth IP reading: Discussion and review
- excursion (location Vienna)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive evaluation of the course 60 percentage points are required (at least 6 mini-tests)

1 (excellent) 100-90 percentage points

2 (good) 89-81 percentage points

3 (satisfactory) 80-71 percentage points

4 (sufficient) 70-60 percentage points

5 (insufficient) 59-0 percentage points

Advanced reading: 19th-20th century imperialism debate, contemporary relevance of PRC-Chinese narratives in terms of overcoming historical Western imperialism (opium wars)

Part II (20.Apr.-11.May 2023)

Advanced reading: Realism (Morgenthau, Kissinger), Neorealism (Ditzel), additional literature on H. Kissinger's China policy
Advanced Reading: Global governance (Brand), the PRC-Chinese concept of the "community of common destiny for mankind" theoretical approach and international projection
- three written mini-tests

Part III (May 25 - June 29, 2023)

Advanced reading: climate governance (Aykut, Vogler), additional literature on China's role in the global climate change crisis.
China's IR theories vs. decoupling processes: Yan Xuetong's Responsible Global Power Theory and Qin Yaqing's, Relationality and Process: Cultural Construction in Chinese International Relations Theory (2012).
