Aims, contents and method of the course

The course introduces students into the key issues, terms, debates and theories of International Politics with a focus on their applicability for analyzing current political events.

The special theme is to explore the strategies, practices and concepts of international actors targeted at transforming intra-state conflicts and peace-building in post-conflict societies. Specific reference will be made to the implementation of peace agreements and to key terms, approaches and theories of peace and conflict studies and methods and strategies of conflict transformation and resolution. The complex interplay of the various actors and the multi-dimensional effects of peace processes will be examined by means of case studies (Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina et al).

The aims of the course are:
* Deepening the knowledge of the contents of the lecture on International Politics;
* Presenting key theories of peace studies, conflict anlysis as well as approaches and international strategies to conflict transformation, by means of case studies (Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina et al)
* Providing an introduction into the specific methods of scientific work in International Politics.

The course methods and requirements include (a.o.):
* Reading and discussing of selected texts
* Short/initial presentations (in small groups)
* Group discussions (small text presentations, simulated panel discussions) and group works
* Text summaries, protocols of scientific events, course protocol
* Guidance with elaborating the final essay/term paper

Assessment and permitted materials

* written homework assignments
* term paper
* oral performances (presentations, participating in group discussions, class participation, etc);
* regular attendance (max. two unexcused absences).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic understanding of the theories, concepts, terms and methods of International Politics and of Peace and Conflict Studies and the ability to critically reflect and apply them.
