By means of current case studies, various manifestations of Latin American modernity will be discussed on the basis of different theoretical and conceptual approaches. These will lead to an understanding of the structural heterogeneity of Latin American economies and societies and the importance of both liberal-market and welfare state projects. The role of social movements will be placed in this tension.
The historical development of the terms, the current contexts of use, and the particular dynamics of circulation in the continental and global interconnectedness of Latin America will be presented and analyzed. Theoretical perspectives include textual approaches to the specialized texts as well as various approaches from the social and cultural sciences and from the field of gender studies.
Attendance is nevertheless highly recommended for the purpose of active participation in the reflection rounds following each lecture, as well as for mutual networking.
