Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The reading course complements the main lecture "International Politics", which discusses the historical, conceptual, and theoretical basics of international politics and also examines links, narratives, and practices embedded within the broader context of the Imperial Mode of Living. In particular, we will concentrate on current international politics issues such as dimensions of inequality between the so-called global north and south, the role of social movements and collective actors in the international context, and the socio-ecological crisis. It is strongly advised to keep track of the latest international news (via main newspapers, newsletters, podcasts, etc.) as they will be a recurrent material for reflection and analysis. Critical perspectives will be applied to these contemporary debates in order to broaden our understanding of the unequal global north-south relations. An analysis of socio-environmental struggles reveals the assumption of unlimited access to resources, which is secured through hegemonic patterns of the world economy and a contested role of the state. Among the topics and categories to be discussed are postcolonial approaches, intersectionality, global political ecology, and a Latin American regional focus; these will be used to explore the complexity of the dynamics between the geopolitical north and south.
Assessment and permitted materials
As this reading course requires continuous evaluation, attendance is mandatory. Active reading is encouraged by submitting reading notes prior to each session; active participation is expected. Participant co-moderation will be organized accordingly. A final review paper (min. 2000 words) will be compulsory, which can be prepared in English or Spanish. As an alternative to the written final assignment, a sound/video podcast or Vlog (10-15 minutes) may be submitted. Details about the deadline and structure of the course will be presented during the first session.We kindly encourage students to regularly check the Moodle platform and official E-mails of the University of Vienna for up-to-date adjustments to this course due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirements will include positively completing all the assessment criteria mentioned above.
Grading Scale:
1 = 87-100 % excellent (outstanding performance)
2 = 75-86 % good (generally good, but with some errors)
3 = 63-74 % satisfactory (generally sound work with a number of substantial errors)
4 = 50-62 % sufficient (performance meets the minimum criteria)
5 = 0 – 49 % unsatisfactory (< 50%; substantial improvement necessary; requirement of further work)
Grading criteria:
1. Reading notes: 20%
2. Attendance, active participation, and working groups: 20%
3. Co-moderation: 20%
4. Final review paper or podcast: 40%Further details will be introduced during the first session and uploaded to the Moodle platform. The reading course will be held in English. However, working knowledge of German is required as some additional literature will be provided in German.
Two unexcused absences are allowed. Please notice that attendance at the first session is mandatory.Good academic practice is expected. This includes a proper citation of sources.
