Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture provides an overview of the political system of the European Union (EU) with a special focus on Austria's membership. Following a historical overview of Austria's relations with the EU, the course focuses on the institutional characteristics of the European multi-level system and the potential for participation and effects on the member states, in particular Austria. The political decision-making processes of the European institutions are examined as well as the implementation of EU law in Austria. Particular attention is paid to the implications for the Austrian parliament, the executive and the judiciary. Finally, the democratic quality of the EU, including its causes and possible solutions, will be discussed. Towards the end of the course, there will be exemplary discussions on the political field of asylum and migration policy, which will illustrate the content of the course once again.
