Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar addresses the topic of how selected European states and Europe as a whole deal with phenomena spawned by the politics of memory, the culture of commemoration and identity constructions. It looks at the case of public conflict around the political history of Europe and its national states with a temporal focus on the period since 1989 and the fall of the Iron Curtain. Against the backdrop of the European integration and development process, it explores the national and European politics of memory and identity and respective representations in the public space.
The relevance of memory and commemoration for political science follows already from the fact that political action implies to generate representations in the social world, to make them obligatory and thereby to make an impact on social reality. The way history is dealt with in public discourses and debates about appropriate forms of commemoration reflects aspects of the political culture and the political identity of a society and offers opportunities for inclusion. By selecting what is remembered and how and by stage-managing commemoration of past events the present political order is interpreted and legitimized.
In terms of methodology, the seminar aims at integrating approaches and concepts from the cultural and political sciences.
