Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Crises are nothing new to the European integration process. Each decade has had its own fair share of crises that have contributed to the flexibility/complexity of the Union we have today. For the most part of the last decade, the European Union (EU) has been hit by a wave of different, interconnected and at times mutually reinforcing crises. Solutions offered range from more supranational action to a retreat to national sovereignty.
Three levels will be highlighted: EU institutions, its member states as well as selected key EU policies. Completion of the seminar will enable students to have a broader understanding of the EU as well as the challenges it currently faces.
Objective of the course:
The aim of the course is twofold: a) to enable students gain in-depth understanding of the effects the crises had/have on the conceptualisation of the European integration process, the inter-relationship among EU member states as well as on key EU policies; b) advance students' ability to produce spoken and written analyses by critically engaging with and applying relevant theoretical/methodological approaches.
Learning outcomes:
• Detailed understanding about issues affecting the European integration process
• Recognition of the specific causes and effects of various current EU crises
• Awareness about the way in which the regional and domestic implications of the concerned issues impact upon each other
• In –depth knowledge of as well as critically apply the theoretical and methodological approaches related to the study
• Class is designed to develop students’ analytical thinking and presentation techniques.
• Research work and essay writing target the improvement of students’ research and academic writing skills, consequently students will be able to:
o Independently produce spoken and written analyses in accordance with good academic practices,
o Practice on raising analytical questions concerning provided topics,
o Plan and present own research, and
o Critically analyse and think conceptually about the EU in crisis debate by using reasoned/well-informed arguments.

Assessment and permitted materials

• 20% Short weekly assignments, Review & WFP participation
• 25% Active and informed participation in class
• 20% Research proposal in the length of 1500 words
• 35% Final paper/essay in the length of 4000 words

In providing students with further advice on academic writing, attendants of this course will also be supported by writing assistants from the Writing Fellows Programme (WFP) of CTL/UNIVIE.

All assignments are compulsory

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Preliminary basic knowledge about the workings of the EU institutions and policies
Eagerness to gain in-depth knowledge of the 21st Century challenges facing the EU.
Attendance and presence of mind are mandatory.

Assessment criteria:
Understanding about current issues affecting the European integration process
Ability to produce spoken and written analyses by critically engaging with and applying theoretical/methodological approaches to relevant issues

Reading list

This is an intensive reading and writing seminar.
There is no adequate textbook for this course.
A reader for the compulsory/background readings with articles, book chapters, blogs/commentaries and/or other sources will be provided at the beginning of the course. Included are also guidelines on how to write good analytical questions, research proposals and essays.
