Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar deals with political measures and governmental actors in the field of asylum and against the background of refugee influx from Ukraine. Austrian asylum and border policy will be thought of in the context of the European area of freedom, security and justice, the core of which is the Schengen Borders Code and the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). In the course of the semester, we will deal with theoretical and conceptual approaches to borders and asylum based on literature. On the other hand, we will empirically deal with the asylum policy developments in Austria since 2015 up to the present. In small groups, we will empirically research the case of Austria. In this way, various facets of Austrian asylum and border policy will be systematically processed, analysed and placed in relation to existing literature within the framework of semester projects.

Assessment and permitted materials

Please note that there are two texts to be read for the first unit. Both will be available in time via Moodle.

The basis for completing the seminar is 5 sections, totalling 100 points:

- Regular attendance, reading, and oral participation in the course - 20 points.

- 3 x submission of theses of the basic texts - 12 points

- Consolidation exercise - 8 points

- Preparation for research workshops - 15 points

- Seminar paper: Content and presentation - 45 points
o Presentation: 15 points
o Finished paper: 30 points

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to meet the minimum requirements, all four performance sub-areas must be completed in principle by the deadline. Due to the examination-immanent character of the course, continuous attendance and active participation in all units is necessary. Attendance in the first unit is absolutely necessary. In addition, please note that a maximum of two absences are allowed in the entire semester.

Plagiarised performances as well as attempts to cheat will lead to non-assessment of the course (an 'X' will be entered in the transcript). In order to ensure good scientific practice, an oral reflection on the submitted written partial performances can be planned individually, which must also be completed positively.
