Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This course introduces students to the history, theory and practical policy of the EU enlargements. The first part juxtaposes the enlargement history against some of the current topical issues such as the risk of 'Brexit', 'Grexit' or illiberal democracies in some of the new member states. This comparison reveals that many of today's problems have a long history, while also suggesting that many complex issues related to the EU enlargement by ever more heterogeneous countries were satisfactorily resolved in the past. The second part focuses on the theoretical explanations of the EU enlargement as well as on the evolution of various components of the enlargement strategy and politics. The final part addresses the consequences of the recent enlargements for the functioning of the EU, Euro area and the outlook for potential members.
