Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture has three main goals: 1. to provide the state-of-the-art in research on Austrian parties, 2. to root this in the relevant political science theories, and 3. to show how Austrian parties place themselves in international comparison with other democracies, in particular West European ones.

The course covers the following themes:
* Party definitions and forms
* the legal framework regulating political parties, the context of the party system
* parties as organizations (structures, capacities, intra-party dynamics)
* parties in the electorate
* inter-party relations
* parties as governmental organizations.

Method: Lecture supported by Powerpoint presentations

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of the semester. Exam sheet to download with three essay questions. You can draw on lecture slides, obligatory and additional readings. You have to, however, cite accordingly.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The assessment is based on the result of the written final exam (100%). For a positive grade, 51 (out of 100) points are required in the written exam.

Scheme for grading:
1–50 points: 5
51–50 points: 4
61–60 points: 3
71–75 points: 2
86–100 points: 1.
