Online teaching is not comparable to face-to-face teaching. If the Corona measures of the government and the university allow it, as much of this seminar as possible will be held as face-to-face teaching. The personal presence of students is also desired in the case of hybrid teaching, of course, but not mandatory- If this is not possible due to increasing infection rates or the associated measures, it may also be that individual appointments are held only in the form of reading and smaller written work on it, since longer online courses often make less sense than intensive reading and written reflection on what has been read.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is, on the one hand, to give an overview of Austrian religious policy, its historical development and its legal and political framework and, on the other hand, to discuss specifically Austrian Islamic policy, in which questions of religious policy intersect with a number of foreign and domestic policy issues.
Since this is a seminar that will probably have to be offered as a hybrid course due to the specifications on the Corona pandemic that were still not known when the course concept was developed, the course will consist of a lecture element on the one hand, but also a relatively large amount of reading with smaller written assignments during the semester and a seminar paper at the end of the semester on the other. However, as much seminar character as possible should be retained. In this respect - if the regulations of the federal government and the university allow it - as much classroom teaching with discussion as possible is planned. However, since the development in this regard is not yet foreseeable in the fall, this can still be fixed at the beginning of the semester. In this respect, the contents of the course have been finalized, but not yet the methods. However, there will only be presentations by students if face-to-face teaching is possible.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Participation in discussions (if these can take place)
2. Short written reflections on read texts or current examples of the politics of religion and Islam in Austria
3. Seminar paper at the end of the Semester (in German, English, Spanisch or Arabic)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a passing grade, students must have turned in at least all written reflections during the semester and a seminar paper they have written themselves. The latter must meet the minimum standards for a passing grade. Participation in discussions may enhance a passing grade. The seminar paper counts 50% toward the grade, the written short papers during the semester and the discussions together count 50%.

Examination topics

Since this is an examination-immanent course, there is no examination material. In the course of the semester, however, students should learn about the main features of Austrian religious policy and Islam policy and learn to reflect on them critically.
In addition, the writing of a scientific seminar paper will be practiced.
