Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar deals with the social power of trade unions in the newest member of the European Union, Croatia. The different forms of workers` power according to E.O.Wright, Beverly Silver and Klaus Dörre serve as a theoretical framework. After an introduction into this conception of power we will look at the situation in Croatia concerning their organizational power, their market power based on the situation on the labour market, their production power based on their strength in branches of strategic meaning and their institutional power based on their position in institutions. To concretize this general picture a comparison between the situation of unions in two economic branches is presented. In the end we will look at the role of unions in other social movements like the students` movement.
Assessment and permitted materials
- Research essay (50%)- Presentation in class (50%)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of this seminar is an introduction into the industrial relations in Croatia. But the existing institutional frame is not the most important point - more important is the role of trade unions as actors who can potentially change the relationships of power.
Examination topics
In each session a group will give a talk about the basic literature. Afterwards we will discuss about some questions about the basic literature which participants who do not give a talk should send to me up to saturday before the session.
It would be very good if students with some knowledge of the Croatian/Serbian/Bosnian language would take part in this seminar, especially those for whom it is their mother tongue.
