Aims, contents and method of the course

The course provides relevant content on the subject of "Violence against women: Istanbul Convention in EU member states", among the most important topics
 Definition and disambiguation, gender-based violence, violence against women, forms and dimensions of violence
 Violence against women - historical outline and emergence of the "Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence", the so-called "Istanbul Convention"
 The Istanbul Convention as the main tool in the protection against gender-based violence
 The EU and gender-based violence
 The extent of violence against women in the EU (prevalence, FRA study).
 Update on the Istanbul Convention, ratifications by EU Member States, evaluation of implementation
 Representation of violence against women and in the context of the Istanbul Convention Art.13 Awareness Raising using the example of findings and governance in Austria and Spain.
 Gender, violence and women refugees
 Outlook, research gaps, research desiderata
The students will receive a comprehensive presentation of the most important instrument for the protection against violence against women and domestic violence as well as related measures in the context of feminist political science as well as gender and anti-violence research.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

 Mandatory regular attendance (max 2x absence)
 Active participation, timely delivery of all exercises and presentation (individual and group work)
 The overall grade for a positive assessment results from the evaluation of all services provided.
 Details regarding assessment at the beginning of the course.

Examination topics

The course has exam-inherent character.
 Partial performances in the form of text summaries, sketch of ideas, final course work, presentation of given content (see above)
 Knowledge of citation and of criteria of scientific work is required
