Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar deals with the topic of measuring human rights in Europe from a social science perspective. Participation in the seminar will provide students with an overview of the legal, institutional and political framework of human and fundamental rights. Students will learn about data sources and quantitative methods to measure issues linked to human rights in Europe. Apart from measuring general human rights commitment and violations in general (e.g. from international agreements and their monitoring), the seminar will discuss selected topics and rights areas, such as equality, non-discrimination, data protection and private life as well as gender and migration.Participation does not require and methodological skills. Students with different methodological skills and knowledge can participate and will work on tasks according to their skills.
Assessment and permitted materials
Successful participation requires regular attendance in the seminar as well as the preparation of a seminar paper dealing with a topic linked to the seminar.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will be graded according to the following criteria:
Preparation of a short concept note outlining the ideas for the seminar paper (15 percent)
Presentation (outline, presentation, content) (25 percent)
Discussion of another student’s presentation (10 percent)
Seminar paper (40 percent)
Active participation and attendance (10 percent)
Students must not miss more than two teaching units.

Examination topics
Students have to prepare a paper on a selected topic, and present the paper prior to finalisation. The paper should discuss a human rights-related question and analyse the question based on existing data (e.g. through using existing indicators) from one or more European countries.
