Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, we will deal with various aspects of the complex relations between the European Union and Israel, such as political divergence with respect to the management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, co-operation in trade, research and development, and cultural affairs. The development and status quo of the EU-Israel relations (e.g. the association agreement, the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, the European Neighbourhood Policy, etc.) will be scrutinised. All topics will be discussed against the backdrop of the legacy of the Holocaust, past and present-day antisemitism, and contested approaches to threats posed by Islamicist ideology and groups.
The course structure will differ from common undergraduate classes where participants are expected to come up with ready-made presentations and seminar papers. Due to the intricacy of the EU-Israel relations and the related scholarly debate, we will explore the different stages of library and online research, discussion of appropriate research design, presentation of concepts and peer review. By the end of the semester, you will have to hand in a short research proposal. In addition, it is planned to invite guest speakers to class.
The course addresses international as well as domestic students who display interest in thorough academic inspection of this fiercely debated subject and want to acquire proper research and writing skills. Course participants may, of course, focus on their specific interests within the field of EU-Israel relations.
