Aims, contents and method of the course

This course focuses on the most frequetly used social network analysis approaches that are implemented in the program Pajek and in most of the other social network programs:

1. Basic network concepts: network representation by matrix, graph; types of networks undirected networks, directed networks, multi-relational networks, 2-mode networks, temporal networks; size and density;
2. Paths in networks: walk, chain and path; closed walk, cycle, closed chain, loop; length and value of path; the shortest path, k-neighbours; acyclic networks;
3. Centrality: degree, closeness, betweenness; hubs and authorities; an application;
4. Connectivity; weakly, strongly and bi-connected components; contraction; extraction;
5. Cohesion: triads, cliques, cores, islands;
6. 2-mode networks: examples of 2-mode networks; transforming 2-mode to 1-mode networks;
7. Blockmodeling: direct and indirect approaches; structural, regular equivalence; generalised blockmodeling and blockmodeling of 2-mode networks.

The course will be given from December 14 till November 22, 2009. There will be three meetings of 4 hours for lectures. Practical work with the program Pajek will be on December 21 and December 22, 2009 (dr. Ale¿ ¿iberna). Practical work with program Pajek will include description of networks in Pajek input file, network layouts, visualisation and network analysis with Pajek.

It is assumed that the students had a course on statistics.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course requirement is a research report on an application of social network analysis approaches to a research problem.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The purpose is that the participants will be able after the course to choose an appropriate social network analysis approach and to analyse the data in a proper way. For this a practical excercise is necessary.
